In a
departure from Cuongs renditions of physical objects, here he paints two figures, a
man and woman. What is interesting is how
the two figures seem so permanent and integrated into the background. There is a sense of eternity, almost as if the
figures are made of stone. |
Strictly
banned by the communists as an emblem of decadence, abstract art has recently been
reintroduced to Vietnam. Cuong, a leading
practitioner of this emotive and expressive form, seeks to explore the deeper relationship
between object and spirit. Juxtaposing highly
textured renditions of objects onto smooth and silky backdrops, he projects a constrained,
yet seductive vision where even the humblest of objects is emotionally charged.
A
winner of the prestigious 1996 Philip Morris Group of Companies ASEAN award, Cuong has
also exhibited worldwide including Europe, Japan, Hong Kong and recently in the USA. |
