Javier Manrique

j0115834.gif (185 bytes) Main Gallery

In this exhibition Manrique offers us a study or contemplation of elements and objects often taken for granted in everyday life. He expresses himself in two different formats - oils and mixed media on canvas and monoprints on paper, both exhibited here. His canvases are densely layered and heavily worked, but with a limited palette which invokes a sense of minimalism. The monoprints are executed spontaneously at a fine arts facility in Mexico City, where the artist has an annual residency. It is interesting to compare these work methods side by side with similar subject matter. But with either method the artist's goals remain the same - to engage the viewer in a dialog, producing a meditation on the inner core of life.

Manrique has exhibited locally at SFMOMA Rental, Vorpal and Rizzoli Galleries. His museum exhibitions include the Museo de Arte Moderno, Museo de Arte Contemporaneo and the Rufino Tamayo Museum in Mexico.
