Eric Leroux

Cultural identity has been a cornerstone of Leroux’s art and life experience since childhood.  His residencies in Europe, Africa and Asia have had a profound impact on both his artistic sensibilities and his perception of self.  As such, Leroux can be considered the consummate expatriate, seeking refuge in foreign cultures while at the same time taking on new cultural personas.

By personally absorbing these cultures, Leroux introduces a host of inventive images and motifs in his works.  The paintings featured here were created in France and California, and often depict his reaction to modernity, while maintaining his use of traditional Asian materials and techniques.

For over seven years Leroux made Hanoi, Vietnam his home.   Integral to a budding art scene there, he is known as a principal artist at the influential Salon Natasha gallery.  Inspired by traditional Vietnamese paintings he has mastered the use of space, calligraphic techniques and acrylic washes to build up layers of textures as a backdrop to his stories.

Leroux has exhibited widely in Asia, including numerous solo shows at Salon Natasha in Vietnam.  He has also been featured in France, Australia and the USA.  In addition to exhibitions, his works have been featured in several catalogs including Crosscurrents, Spirit of Hanoi and Paris-Hanoi-Saigon.  He has also participated in artist performances in Hanoi with peer artists such as Truong Tan.
