"I do not consider myself a Mexican artist in a traditional
sense."
Like the master
Mexican modernist Rufino Tamayo, Tovar's works seek to break down perceptual paradigms and
preconceptions about Mexican art. Tovar's recent series titled "Imaginary
Landscape" highlight the use of colors, textures and the resultant emotions in an
inimitably abstract manner. The figurative aspect of the work is almost secondary; it is
subservient to the emotional aura projected by use of color. This uncanny ability to use
color and space is what elevates the works out of provinciality and towards a modernist
international realm. This vision is enhanced by the artist's extensive travels in Europe,
South America and Africa.
Tovar exhibits
widely in California, Mexico and Germany.
His works are in the collections of the Mexican Museum,
San Francisco and Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Germany.
